Uber plans to deliver food with drones from 2021
The Wall Street Journal journalists found an announcement on the Uber website about finding a top manager who will help the company develop its own drones for the 2019 year and begin their commercial use by the 2021 year.
The company, according to reports, was looking for a manager who should launch a food delivery program using drones, notes USA Today. According to the report, Uber hopes that next year unmanned aerial vehicles will be launched, and the project’s goal will be to ensure that commercial services operate within the framework of the UberEats brand in several markets in just over two years.
After questions from the WSJ, the company removed the vacancy and explained that the deleted entry did not reflect the project very well, which is still at an early stage of development, writes Vc.ru.
The head of Uber Dara Khosrovshahi said that the company needs "flying burgers".
In May, Khosrovshakhi told those present at the Uber Elevate summit that the company is working on this project, USA Today notes.
“It is my personal belief that the key to urban mobility is the flying burger,” the company's CEO said at the event, noting that the company was one of the few chosen to participate in a government-approved commercial pilot test program in San Diego.
Uber has already announced plans to launch flying taxis, and Chief Product Officer Jeff Holden has previously expressed confidence that this program will become a reality by 2020.
As for delivery using drones, Uber is far from the only company that hopes to take part in such a program. Amazon has been very active in its ambitions on this issue, while other companies, such as UPS, are still studying the topic.
Uber, Apple, Microsoft and other companies received permission to use drones to transport food in the US in May 2018. At the same time, the US Department of Transportation denied Amazon and the Chinese manufacturer of drones DJI.
So far, 7-Eleven is leading among the internal product delivery services, delivering 77 products to customers in Reno, Nevada, in partnership with the dirk manufacturer Flirtey after a successful test earlier this year.
