Russia may have access to biometric data of Americans

The fingerprint analysis software used by the FBI and 18 other US law enforcement agencies contains code created by JSC Papillon, a Russian company with close ties to the Kremlin.
This is evidenced by a number of documents and witness testimony, writes The Hill.
French company Safran, which in 2009 won the FBI tender for software for working with biometric data, in 2008 received a license to use the program code created by the Russian company Papillon JSC. In 2011, this software was installed in the FBI.
In addition, the agreement between the French and Russian companies provided that the parties undertake to keep the fact of their cooperation secret.
One source, former employee Safran Phillip Desbois, said that the leaders of the French company were seriously worried that the FBI would recognize the true origin of the code in the program.
"They told me, 'We'll be in big trouble if the FBI finds out about the origin of the algorithm.' It sounded like we had done something bad, which is a secret that should remain between us and we should not tell anyone about it,” Desbois said.
Ex-employee filed a lawsuit against Safran, arguing that the company fraudulently received 1 billion dollars from US law enforcement.
In agreement between Safran and Papilon, which provides Russian with software updates by the end of 2013, also noted separately that Russians guarantee that the code they provide does not contain any possibilities for hacking or outside control.
Papilon regularly works with law enforcement agencies in Russia, including the Federal Security Service (FSB), as well as the GRU.
It is unclear whether the Russian code is still used in software by US government agencies or whether the software has been changed.
The FBI said that all the software used by the agency passed the necessary checks.
In this case, JSC Papillon openly reports on its long-term cooperation with the FSB on its website.
