Trump stopped programs for refugees and banned entry to the Syrians

US President Donald Trump has banned refugees from Syria and other countries that support terrorism from entering the United States, and also suspended the American refugee program for 120 days. On January 27, the president signed a decree establishing tougher barriers to entry for immigrants.

The document will also limit the flow of refugees into the country through a mechanism that Trump called "extreme vetting," CNN reported.

“The entry of Syrian nationals as refugees is contrary to the interests of the United States, and I am freezing entry until such time as I determine that significant changes have occurred […] to permit the admission of Syrian refugees in a manner consistent with the national interest,” the executive order reads. shortly after its signing, writes Русская служба BBC.

The decree states that the United States suspends the program for accepting refugees on 120 days to determine the effectiveness of current regulations. The text also notes that the United States will accept no more than 50 thousands of refugees in the 2017 fiscal year, with priority being given to refugees persecuted for religious reasons.

The main provisions of the decree:

• the program for accepting refugees from Syria stops completely;
• reception of refugees from other countries is suspended for 120 days;
• The United States will introduce mandatory interviews for visas to enter the country;
• It is planned to accelerate the creation of a biometric system for controlling entry.

Trump signed the decree immediately after the inauguration ceremony of General James Mattis as US Secretary of Defense.

“We only want to allow into our country those who support our country and who love our people passionately,” Trump emphasized at the signing ceremony, which was broadcast on American television channels.

Details of the decree leaked to the press earlier this week. The media reported that in addition to suspending the program for accepting refugees, a moratorium on the entry of 7 citizens of Muslim countries (Sudan, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Iraq, Iran and Syria) is expected, but the decree does not mention specific states.

Also, the decree does not contain details of the plan to create “safe zones” for internally displaced persons from Syria, which was reported in the American press.

In addition to the order on migrants, Trump also signed a document on the "great overhaul" of the US military, which kicks off a plan to develop "new aircraft, vessels, resources and tools for our men and women in uniform."

As the administration of former President Barack Obama has reported, over the past year, the United States received about 10 thousands of Syrian immigrants.

For comparison, Canada, whose population is 9 times smaller than its southern neighbor, accommodated 35 thousand newly arrived Syrians on its territory during the same period.

During his election campaign, Donald Trump proposed tightly closing Muslims from entering the United States until “our people figure out what’s going on.”

However, after the election victory, Trump's rhetoric softened, and he never once repeated this thesis in public.
