Trump promises to remove one of America’s most dangerous gangs

President Donald Trump is ready to deal with the MS-13 gang after the four-time murder in Long Island, New York. Last week, four teenagers died after being severely beaten by gang members. In his Twitter feed, Trump promises to quickly remove the gang from the streets of the United States.

Founded by Central American immigrants in Los Angeles in the 13s, the MS-1890 gang became known for its ruthless and violent methods. Most of its founding members fled El Salvador for the United States during the country's 12-year civil war. Since then, the gang's membership has grown to at least 10 in the United States and more than 30 worldwide, according to the FBI.

“The [MS-13] gang is one of the most dangerous and rapidly growing criminal groups in the world today,” said Philip Holloway, a legal analyst and former police officer. “MS-13’s motto is: ‘Mata, roba, viola, controla’ (murder, theft, rape, control),” he noted.

The gang managed to expand its illegal activities despite sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department under the Obama administration. “They are involved in numerous crimes, including murder, racketeering, drug trafficking. Sex and human trafficking, including prostitution,” Holloway said.

MS-13 also uses violence as a means of extortion, which earns most of its income, said Louis Salinas, a professor of sociology at the University of Houston.

In 2015, the US Treasury Department froze the assets of three gang members who sent funds back to El Salvador. In 2012, the Obama administration called the MC-13 a transnational criminal organization and imposed sanctions against six gang members.

While the US government is trying to freeze the accounts of members of the MS-13 gang, its members' ardent loyalty is still unique, says Ron Hosco, former deputy director of the FBI's criminal investigations department.

“They are very close-knit and are often run by bosses imprisoned in El Salvador. Their goal is to spread throughout American society. This typically has an aggressive internal enforcement mechanism that equates to internal discipline involving physical violence and killing for disrespect or betrayal,” he said.

Memberships in street gangs showed no signs of diminishing, according to FBI reports in 2015. Recently, law enforcement agencies have taken a tougher stance on arrests.

Tuesday during an interview on Fox News Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the gang "can claim" the name of the terrorist group.

In El Salvador, MS-13 is already considered a terrorist organization.
