Trump appointed "Putin's longtime friend" to the post of new US Secretary of State

Donald Trump on Tuesday morning called the name of the person who will take one of the key positions in the new administration. The head of the country's largest oil company Exxon Mobil 64, Rex Tillerson, will be the US Secretary of State.

Interestingly, the appointment of Tillerson to the post of head of the State Department Trump сообщил on his Twitter account. The president-elect called the Exxon Mobil chief "one of the world's truly great business leaders."

“He will be a strong and objective defender of America's vital national interests, and will help reverse years of misguided foreign policies and actions that have weakened America's security and standing in the world,” Trump said in a statement, as quoted by Reuters.

Tillerson said that he shares Trump’s views on “restoring confidence in the foreign relations of the United States and developing the country’s national security,” NEWSru.com reports.

Many analysts predicted the day before that Tillerson would most likely take the post of head of the US foreign policy department. At the same time, Democrats and some Republicans spoke quite critically of Tillerson, citing the fact that the new head of the State Department had extensive “ties with Russia,” since ExxonMobil had joint projects with Rosneft, and Tillerson met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

As wrote The Wall Street JournalTillerson’s friends and colleagues say that very few US citizens have been in closer contact with Putin, with whom he has been acquainted since he represented Exxon’s interests in Russia under Boris Yeltsin’s rule. NEWSru.com emphasizes that Tillerson’s ties with Russia and Vladimir Putin are so close that in 2012, by decree of President Putin, Tillerson was awarded the Order of Friendship.
