Richard Dennis opened fire on 2-year-old Christopher Bergan near his home in Pensacola, Florida on Tuesday, October 37. Police called the incident "a terrible tragedy."

At a press conference on Thursday, 3 October, Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson announced that Dennis would not be charged.

Johnson said that Bergan is married to Dennis's daughter, but lived in Norway. He flew to Florida Airport on Tuesday evening. After arrival, the man immediately went to his father-in-law's house.

Dennis, who was unaware of Bergan's arrival, heard someone knock on the back door near 23: 30.

He turned on the light on the porch, and at that moment Bergan, jumping out of the “shadow”, began to growl.

Shuddered by surprise, Dennis fired one shot, hitting Bergan in the chest. The bullet was fatal. The man died instantly.

Johnson noted that earlier one of Dennis's relatives came to his house and rang the doorbell in the same way. After that they quarreled.

The sheriff noted that Dennis would not be charged because "this should not have happened."

The neighbors, learning about this incident, are shocked.

Bergan married Dennis's daughter and lived in Florida for a while before they moved to his native Norway.
