The US wants to impose sanctions against the intelligence and defense structures of Russia

The US State Department is proposing to impose sanctions on the Russian Central Intelligence Agency (GRU) and certain other defense structures of the country.

This is stated in the published on the website of the Federal Register document on measures to ensure the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (including nuclear, chemical, biological weapons and missiles capable of carrying them).

“The law penalizes foreign entities and individuals for selling or purchasing from Iran, Syria or North Korea goods, services or technologies that could contribute to the development of weapons of mass destruction,” the document says.

The official publication of this decision is scheduled for 10 May 2018.

The list of individuals and legal entities in respect of which it is proposed to impose sanctions are Russian, Chinese, Syrian, Egyptian, Iranian, Turkish, North Korean, as well as individuals and legal entities representing the UAE.

Russian structures included in the proposed sanctions list:

• Training center for anti-aircraft missile forces in Gatchina;
• 18 Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Russia in Kursk;
• Instrument Engineering Design Office in Tula;
• 183-th Guards anti-aircraft missile regiment;
• Research and Production Concern "Barley";
• General Directorate General Staff (GRU).

If the document is published without changes, the sanctions will be imposed for two years.

В Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia called the plan for the introduction of new restrictive measures "an attempt to avenge the fiasco of a rocket attack on Syria."

“Washington again announced additional anti-Russian sanctions. Formally, they are trying to accuse Russia of violating an American law prohibiting military-technical cooperation with Iran, North Korea and Syria, which cannot have anything to do with our country. In reality, we are clearly talking about a banal desire to reckon with the fiasco of the missile attack against the Syrian Arab Republic undertaken by the United States on April 14 together with Great Britain and France in violation of international law,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

According to Russian diplomats, the confirmation of their version is that the sanctions are directed against those defense organizations that trained the Syrian air defense soldiers.

“This is evidenced by the inclusion in the American sanctions list of the Gatchina Anti-Aircraft Training Center of the A.F. Mozhaisky Military Space Academy and even the 183rd Guards Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Apparently, for the fact that they well taught and instructed the soldiers of the Syrian air defense, who shot down most of the missiles of the Western aggressors,” the department noted.

Russian diplomats also stressed that “by economic or military pressure, Russia cannot be forced to abandon defending its own interests and the support of its partners.”
