US will allocate $ 10 million to victims of the Chernobyl accident

The United States pledged to provide 10 millions of dollars in aid to those affected by the Chernobyl accident.

26 April 1986, after the explosion of the fourth reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, 350 thousand people were evacuated.

As stated by State Department spokesman John Kirby, the allocated funds will be used to “ensure the safety of future generations living in the affected regions.”

New funds have been allocated in addition to the more than 400 millions of dollars that the US will allocate as part of international efforts to restore the environment in the areas adjacent to nuclear power plants and ensure their safety.

Around 40 countries contributed to the implementation of the 2,3 billion-dollar project to build a special dome above the building where the destroyed reactor is located. After the dome has been erected, the dismantling of the reactor and work on the removal of lava-like fuel-containing masses will begin.

According to official data, thirty years ago, 31 died as a result of the Chernobyl accident, however, thousands more people died from the effects of radiation exposure over the past years.
