US demands to extradite FIFA officials from Switzerland

The US authorities sent a request to the Swiss law enforcement authorities for the extradition of FIFA officials who were detained earlier as part of an investigation into a high-profile corruption case.

According to the Swiss Ministry of Justice and Police, the request has already been received. In this case, materials received from the United States have not yet been considered.

It is about issuing seven high-ranking officials detained in Zurich on suspicion of systematically receiving bribes. The operation was conducted by the Swiss police on the basis of materials received from the FBI.

FIFA corruption scandal broke out in late May. Following the investigation, the FBI charged 14 to individuals, nine of whom were former or current FIFA functionaries.

Against the background of the scandal, FIFA President Joseph Blatter agreed to leave his post, noting that the special congress of the organization, which will be held no earlier than December, must choose a successor. Up to this point Blatter will remain the head of FIFA.
