US intercepts two Russian bombers near Alaska
On Saturday, the US Air Force F-22 fighters intercepted two Russian atomic strategic bomber near Alaska, which was confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The incident occurred outside of the sovereign airspace of the United States right in front of Russia's largest military exercises in modern history, writes Business Insider.
“Two Alaska-based F-22 fighter jets intercepted and visually identified two Tu-95 Bear bombers flying over the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), south of the Aleutian Islands,” said Michael Kucharek, a spokesman for the North American Air Force. Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
“Two Russian Tu-95 bombers were intercepted and controlled by F-22s until the bombers left ADIZ along the Aleutian Island chain, heading west,” Kucharek continued.
Although the incident ended peacefully, a Defense Ministry official told reporters that Russian bombers may have been training a possible missile attack on American missiles and radar in Alaska.
Alaska, the closest U.S. state to Russia, hosts some of the most advanced U.S. missile and missile defense installations, which function as the eyes and ears of much of the U.S. Air Force's strategic assets.
Once the war broke out between the United States and Russia, these objects in Alaska could be the likely first targets of defeat.
Practical strikes against the main American targets almost coincide with the stated goals of large-scale Russian military exercises, which are planned to be held in the eastern region of the country next week. Earlier it was reported that Russia and China, which are joining parts of the exercises, will reproduce a potential nuclear war.
In addition, Russian bombers may have tried to check the US response time to a possible air threat.
In the Mediterranean, where Russia and its ally Syria were besieging the unconquered province of Idlib, the planes practiced refueling and expanding access zones, Russian media reported.
