Neighbors sued a lawyer from Brooklyn, who screamed in the apartment
The court fined lawyer Andrea Coleman, who screams and curses in her apartment, and also loudly listens to music, thereby terrorizing her neighbors.
The charge is "very unusual, but it shows how crazy she is," said board member Dennis Mugra, who is also an attorney.
Andrea Coleman was fined $ 31 000 for disobeying the court's decision to remain silent.
After that, Judge Edgar Walker came up with an alternative: he would have canceled the penalty if Coleman allowed the acoustic board engineer to soundproof her platform on the fifth floor in the 1 Grand Army Plaza. In fact, Walker did not give Coleman much choice.
If she refuses, the judge will give permission to install sound insulation in a "violent way."
59-year-old Coleman began to “constantly shout and rant” about two years ago, according to a suit of the board of directors of October 2016.
In 2010, she bought this one-room apartment for 765 000 dollars. Such properties are currently selling for more than 1 million dollars.
“The screaming starts as early as 6:30 a.m. and repeats throughout the day and often until midnight,” said her friend, Craig Spolsky.
“Her voice can be clearly heard from my apartment. She uses words like 'murder,' 'rape,' 'death,' and apparently even mentioned my name in the same breath as those threatening words," Spolsky said.
“Obama, the killer in chief,” is a phrase she often says,” Spolsky added.
He and other residents called the police several times, but the police claimed that they could not do anything if they did not see that they were hurting themselves or others, Spolsky said.
“Unless [Coleman] is going to scream—and we know she won't—there is no way her neighbors can co-exist with her on the same floor without soundproofing,” he said.
“There were times when I jumped in my seat at her sudden scream,” Spolsky added.
At a court hearing in January 2017, Coleman stated that her neighbors themselves provoked her behavior.
