Khabensky's film is included in the list of Oscar contenders

Konstantin Khabensky's painting “Sobibor” was among the 87 contenders for the Oscar in the category “Best film in a foreign language,” the organizers said. The long list in this category also included, in particular, the Belarusian film “Crystal” by director Darya Zhuk, the Ukrainian film “Donbass” by Sergey Loznitsa and the film “The Hidden Man” by Chinese actor and director Jiang Wen.

The titles of the five films, which will be among the nominees of the award, will be announced on 22 on January 2019 of the year, the award will be awarded on February 24 at the 91 th Oscar ceremony at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

The film is based on real events and tells about the only successful uprising of prisoners of the Nazi concentration camp in the entire history of World War II. It happened in Sobibor 14 on October 1943 of the year, headed by Soviet officer Alexander Pechersky.

According to historians, there were almost 550 prisoners in the camp, 130 of them did not participate in the uprising, about 80 died while escaping. For two weeks the German police raided and found about 170 fugitives, they were all immediately shot. Approximately 90 of former prisoners were given to the Nazis by local residents or collaborators killed. Until the end of the war, according to various sources, only the 53 participant in the uprising survived.

In addition to Khabensky, the film starred Gela Meskhi, Christopher Lambert, Maria Kozhevnikova. On the Oscar, the picture was put forward by the Russian Oscar Committee in early September 2018.
