“I work at a hospital in Long Beach. When the pandemic began, many of our older employees decided it was time for them to retire. Thus, the hospital became more and more patients and less and less staff. And there are still large shortages of a wide variety of health professions. Then my colleague, practicing nurse Sonny San Pedro, and I decided that we needed to create our own school,” - says the doctor.

According to Visal Ng, the CNA program is suitable for virtually anyone with a high school diploma. The course itself lasts about four weeks. First, students study theory, and the second half of the classes are spent in practice - in nursing homes or other medical institutions where special patient care is needed.

“Their responsibilities include everything related to patient care, hygiene and comfort. In fact, all care for patients lies with them. The only thing they can't do is put on an IV or give medicine, because there has to be a separate license for that. This is a very good start for those who want to further study to become a nurse,” says Visal Nga.

“To begin with, our goal is to obtain a work permit. After this, the school looks for employers for graduates who are willing to sponsor a work visa. As for CNAs, the school has several employers that they work with. They are very interested in new professional staff, since there is currently a huge shortage of staff in nursing homes in California,” - says Deborah.

According to her, they are able to assist the immigrants with their documentation, particularly those who have legally entered the US, including individuals in the following groups:

• People who arrived to the US via non-immigration visas;
• Asylum seekers;
• Ukrainians who came through the Uniting For Ukraine program;
• Immigrants who have legally crossed the Mexican border.

If they entered the country illegally, they would need to leave the US before they attempt to apply for a green card, making the entire process considerably more difficult.

Obtaining a green card through work in the USA is, of course, not a quick process, but during this time you can, if you wish, continue your education and grow professionally.

“They can become registered nurses if they want to, or even go further and train as a nurse practitioner, which is almost like being a doctor. So, we are 100% committed to pushing them towards higher education. But even if they don't, a CNA course is a great place to start. “It teaches you how to properly help people who need help, and this skill is useful for every person,” - Dr. Visal Nga summarizes.
