Russian woman accused of extortion of $ 400 thousand from the ex-governor of New York, released

Russian Svetlana Travis-Zakharova, accused of extortion against former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, pleaded guilty and, according to a deal with prosecutors, 2 October was released from prison.

Despite the fact that the confession of guilt essentially resolved the case with Spitzer, Travis-Zakharova pleaded guilty only to attempted petty theft against another person and continues to insist that there was no extortion of $ 400 thousand from Spitzer, writes The Washington Post.

Under the terms of the plea bargain, 27-year-old Zakharova was sentenced to imprisonment for up to 90 days. But since more than 90 days have passed since her arrest, she was released immediately after signing the deal.

In addition, Zakharova agreed with the prosecutor's office that will avoid automatic deportation for a criminal offense. Zakharova is a green card holder, and the confession of guilt will not affect her immigration status.

“We have consulted with the victims and they have accepted the plea agreement that was reached,” Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said, referring to Spitzer and another victim of the Russian woman, whose name has not been released.

According to the edition Gazettcoit is Paul Nippes, whose signature Zakharova forged on an apartment rental agreement; besides, the woman tried to steal money from him.

Zakharova was detained in October 2016 with the possibility of making a deposit in the amount of 1 million dollars. Initially, she was charged with more serious crimes than misconduct, in which she admitted, in particular, the extortion of $ 400 000 from the former governor of New York Spitzer.

Although the investigation into the case was initially carried out against the ex-governor himself, Zakharova said that Spitzer had attacked her in a hotel Plaza in Manhattan. After that, she flew to Russia, and the former governor filed a complaint of extortion - the woman allegedly threatened to inform his family and the press about their intimate relationships, which Zakharova provided for money to wealthy New Yorkers.

As part of the investigation, the police detained the Russian woman in the fall of 2016, right after her return to New York, right at Kennedy International Airport. After the arrest, Zakharova insisted that there was no extortion.
