Russians in a crisis switched to fast food

The number of visits to fast-food establishments based on burgers and chicken dishes in January-June 2015 increased by 7% compared with the previous period, while the entire market fell by 5%.

According to the consulting company The NPD Group Russia, McDonald's, KFC and Burger King remain the largest players in the Russian market: their revenues grew by 15%, while the entire fast food segment grew by 7% and the market as a whole only by 2%.

As Maria NP Vannatov, CEO of The NPD Group Russia, said, the growth was due to the discovery of new outlets in eight major Russian cities.

Research company Euromonitor International notes that the fast food segment continued to grow thanks to the expansion of successful players and the attraction of a significant number of visitors with more affordable prices. As a result, there was a noticeable overflow of visitors from more expensive restaurant formats to the points of a moderate price segment, Euromonitor International notes.

According to Andrei Petrakov, executive director of the consulting company Restcon, which specializes in the restaurant business, attendance at the three largest players could grow, rather, at the expense of visitors to other fast-food chains. There was an internal redistribution, visitors choose world leaders in anticipation of better quality and lower prices, he said.

The crisis affected not only the choice of a cafe or restaurant, but also the choice of further migration to other countries.
