Russia accused the United States of interfering in the presidential election of 2018 of the year
The Russian Foreign Ministry accused the United States of “direct interference” in the upcoming presidential elections in the country.
The reason for this accusation was criticism of the Kremlin from the State Department after The Central Election Commission refused to register as a presidential candidate one of the most prominent opposition figures in Russia, Alexei Navalny., writes The New York Post.
After the refusal, the State Department accused the Kremlin of “continuing harassment against independent votes, ranging from journalists to civil society activists and opposition politicians.”
The statement says that the Russian government is unable to protect fundamental freedoms and human rights.
“More broadly, we call on the Russian government to hold genuine elections that are transparent, fair and free, and that guarantee the free expression of the will of the people in accordance with international human rights,” the State Department said in a statement.
Russia did not stay with the answer.
“This is a statement by the State Department, which, I am sure, will not be an isolated one - direct interference in both the election process and the internal affairs of the state,” Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in response.
She added that in the light of such actions of the State Department, the US accusations of Russia's interference in the American elections "look ridiculous."
“And these people for a whole year expressed outrage at the alleged Russian interference in their electoral process. The funny thing is that these are the very people who called RT and Sputnik foreign agents, and who also invest huge amounts of money in countering Russian propaganda,” Zakharova noted.
All US intelligence agencies are confident that Russia interfered in the US presidential election in 2016.although the Russian authorities refute these allegations.
Several congressional committees and Special Attorney Robert Muller are investigating Russia's interference in the US election, and whether representatives of Trump's election headquarters are connected with this alleged interference.
