Russia vetoed US draft resolution on Venezuela in UN Security Council
Russia and China vetoed a draft United Nations Security Council resolution on Venezuela prepared by the United States.
The document, among other things, referred to the holding of a new presidential election in the country, writes RBC.
The Republic of South Africa also voted against the document. Of the 15 members of the UN Security Council, nine supported the draft resolution of the United States, three more abstained from voting. However, according to the UN rules, the document cannot be adopted if at least one permanent member of the Security Council with a veto right has come out against it (these include Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom and France).
Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that the purpose of the document introduced by the United States is to recognize the Venezuelan parliament as a constitutional authority, and the presidential elections held last year as “unfree and dishonest.”
“Hypocritical concern for the humanitarian situation in the country is just a cover,” added Nebenzya. According to him, the adoption of the resolution would be the first case in history when the UN Security Council "would remove one from the post and appointed another president of a sovereign country," which, Nebenzya said, would be "legally illiterate and insignificant."
Russia also prepared its draft resolution on Venezuela, but it was not possible to adopt it.
Seven members of the Security Council, including the United States, voted against the Russian draft resolution, which preserved the integrity and independence of Venezuela, four more abstained from voting, and four countries voted in support - Russia, China, South Africa and Equatorial Guinea.
After voting on the Russian draft resolution, Nebenzya stated that the document was "killed". According to him, Washington and its supporting delegations do not seek dialogue and mediation.
Venezuela is experiencing a protracted economic crisis. Many residents of the country believe that Maduro, who has been ruling the country since 2013, is responsible for him. There is hyperinflation in the country, people lack food and medicines, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans emigrated.
At the end of 2018, elections were held in Venezuela, which the opposition boycotted due to the refusal to allow its key candidates to come to them. As a result, Maduro won, but neither the opposition nor the majority of Latin American countries recognized his victory.
Mass protests began in the country - and in late January, Parliament Speaker Juan Guaydo declared himself provisional president during one of them. In this capacity, it was recognized by the United States, almost all South American countries and many European countries.
Maduro was supported by Russia, China, Turkey, as well as Bolivia, Cuba and Nicaragua. The Venezuelan president himself accused Guaido of working for the United States.
