In Russia, they want to punish officials for Google and WhatsApp

Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Nikolai Patrushev criticized officials for using foreign services of Google, Yahoo and WhatsApp and demanded that the governors take measures to solve this problem.

“Employees of government authorities of the Khabarovsk Territory used the capabilities of a number of foreign information and telecommunications services, such as Google, Yahoo, WhatsApp and others. This is a systemic issue for all of Russia, but in the Far East it is especially acute,” he said at a meeting in Vladivostok.

According to him, the use by officials to solve service issues of resources located abroad is a serious danger.

The location of foreign resource servers abroad has long been bothering officials.

Since September 1, a law enters into force in Russia obliging Internet companies to place personal data of Russian citizens on Russian servers within the country.

According to the law, operators must “ensure the recording, systematization, accumulation, storage, clarification (updating, changing), retrieval of personal data of citizens of the Russian Federation in information databases located on the territory of the Russian Federation.”

“If we delay the adoption of this law, foreign structures will continue to incomprehensibly use the data of Russian users, put it somewhere, store it somewhere,” deputy Vadim Dengin explained the meaning of the bill.

The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, who has long used the social network Instagram, went even further and criticized American social networks, urging subscribers to use Russian Internet products and gadgets, in particular, so as not to “finance the United States.”

“The whole of Russia is “sitting” on US social networks, contributing to the growth of their value. Our vkontakte.ru is no worse. Let’s gradually switch to it,” Kadyrov suggested.
