World's Best Universities Ranking 2024: American Colleges Top the List

In the annual ranking of world universities QS for 2024, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranked first for the 12th year in a row, reports EuroNews.

QS's annual assessment - now in its 20th year - is based on an analysis of 17,5 million scientific articles, the opinions of experts, educators and employers from around the world.

Europe took five of the top 10 positions, and English-speaking universities dominate the top positions with high scores in academic reputation, employer reputation, and faculty-to-student ratio.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA, has won first place with a flawless overall score of 100 for the 12th year in a row.

The University of Cambridge in the UK follows in second place with 99,2 points, while local rival Oxford University is third with 98,9 points.

Harvard University was in fourth place with a score of 98,3 points, and Stanford University was in fifth place with 98,1 points.

The University of California at Berkeley rounds out the top 10 best universities in the world. He scored 90,4 points.

The overall score of the prestigious ranking is achieved taking into account the most important indicators: academic reputation, reputation of the employer, the ratio of teachers and students, the ratio of foreign teachers and students. For the first time this year, new indicators were taken into account: international research work, as well as employment results and stability.

“The new figures reflect the shifts in higher education that have taken place over the past two decades. It's the growing importance of job opportunities and research collaborations," said Quaccarelli Symonds, the firm's analyst who compiled the rankings.

What trends does the rating show

Higher education has undergone significant changes over the past two decades.

“One of the first changes we noticed in the last decades was a really growing student focus on job opportunities,” said Dr. Andrew McFarlane, manager of QS Rankings. In his opinion, this prompted them to increase their attention to employment opportunities.

“Students are leaving university with more debt than ever in a truly competitive global job market,” he said.

Between 2018 and 2024, the representation of Asian, Latin American, Middle Eastern and African universities has significantly increased in the world university rankings. In 2018, the regions accounted for 37% of the ranking, while in 2024 this figure rose to 46%.

MacFarlane noted that China, for example, has achieved a noticeable increase in the rankings thanks to research work.

Meanwhile, the United States and the United Kingdom, traditionally strong countries, have experienced slight downgrades, but this drop does not mean that they are getting worse. MacFarlane says this is an indicator that other institutions around the world are improving their performance and closing the gap.

“You know, the fastest runner is still the fastest runner, but someone else is closing that gap in their time,” he explained.
