Mentally ill resident of Brooklyn threw off the roof of the 4-year-old child

A Brooklyn boy who threw his 4-year-old brother from the roof of a seven-story apartment building told officers he "wanted to see if God could protect the child," police sources said Sunday.

20-year-old Shawn Smith lifted his brother out of bed on Saturday at 2: 40 in the morning and carried him from an apartment on the sixth floor to the roof of a building in Midwood, sources said.

Then he threw the child off the roof and two minutes later he went down to the courtyard to check whether the boy was alive, according to sources.

A few minutes later, he allegedly told the police: “I killed my brother.”

The night before the incident, Smith, who suffered from a mental disorder, sat in the living room and laughed “manic”. This was told by the mother of the children.

“He laughed and laughed. He was usually a quiet person,” said his mother, Odessa Frith.

He left, but returned a few minutes before he dropped Shimron, law enforcement sources said.

Smith recently moved from Guyana to his mother, little brother, and three other brothers and sisters. According to his mother, in April, Smith threatened to kill himself on one of the rooftops. He was hospitalized for three weeks after an episode of mental disorder in July. He stopped drinking the medicines prescribed for him several days before the murder, his mother said.

“I don’t even want to mention him right now,” Frith said.

Frit, who moved here from Guyana in December, trembled and pressed her hands to her head, remembering her dead boy.

“My baby Shimron was just a joy,” she sobbed. Everyone he met loved him. It was joy."

“Tomorrow I’ll go and identify one son, and then I’ll go and support the other son,” she told Diana Coluccio, according to Shimron’s teacher at PS 193.

Neighbors told the police that Smith was "weird" and "talking to himself." He also had a habit of climbing the roof and making noise, the neighbors said.

Mom said that another younger son, Frit, who is 5 years old, does not understand what happened.

"He does not understand. He wants to know when Shimron will come home,” she said.
