Moldovan premiere convicted of fake diploma

A criminal case was opened against the Prime Minister of Moldova, Kirill Gaburici. The General Inspectorate of the Police of Moldova suspects him of falsifying a diploma.

Valeriu Munteanu, a member of the Moldovan Parliament, spent two months trying to find out where and what kind of education Gaburici received. They began to conduct their own investigation, writing requests to the Ministry of Education and other institutions.

At the end of March, upon request, the Minister of Education, Maia Sandu, provided information available to the Ministry about the education of Gaburici in the Microelectronics College, the Academy of Economics and the Slavic University. Munteanu noted that Gaburici could not be enrolled in the Academy of Economics in 1995 year, as it is written in the documents. Based on the information provided, at that moment he did not have a high school diploma or a bachelor's degree, on the basis of which it was possible to enter a university.

Earlier, the government press service commented on this situation, saying that the resume officially submitted by the Prime Minister “contains all the necessary data on the education received,” and also that “during the corresponding period, the country’s higher education institutions were admitted without a bachelor’s degree.”

This message caused even more questions, since, based on the summary, at the time of admission, Gaburici did not have documents about graduation from high school or lyceum. In addition, during the investigation it turned out that Gaburici was expelled from the Economic Academy, and it is unclear on what basis he was enrolled in the Slavic University.

Gaburic headed the government of Moldova on February 18, 2015. Before that, he worked at the cellular communication company “Moldcell”, including as general director, and at the company “Azercell” for two years.
