Astronomers have found new planets suitable for life.
Astronomers have discovered 7 new Earth-like planets using a NASA telescope, 3 of them are in the “habitable zone” - there may be water and a thick atmosphere, they reported live at a press conference in NASA.
The planets were discovered in the open system TRAPPIST-1 in the constellation Aquarius, 40 light years away from Earth. Recall that before the new discovery, astronomers could directly study only 3 Earth-like planets, all in the Solar System: Mars, Venus and Mercury. Scientists promise that in the coming months will be the first results of studying the properties of the planets.
All 7 planets are very similar to Earth. For example, in mass - 0,4-1,4 Earth masses, and in size - 0,7-1,1 Earth radii. There is no more detailed information about the planets found yet, but scientists expect that they may have a rocky nature. In addition, 3 of them are in the center of the “habitable zone”, that is, the temperature on their surface does not prevent the existence of liquid water, and this is a key factor for the possible development of life.
