Popular game helped save a woman from a kidnapper

An Illinois woman was taken hostage in her own home. The victim's daughter noticed that her mother hadn't submitted her Wordle progress and called the police. Read more about this incident CNN.

Denise Holt, 80, said a naked man broke into her home in Lincolnwood, Illinois. He dragged the mistress around the house, cut off the telephone lines and eventually locked her in the bathroom, where she sat for about 17 hours.

“I didn’t think I would survive,” Holt said.

Lincolnwood cops went to check on the woman after they received a phone call from her worried daughter who hadn't heard from her.

The daughter at that time was in Seattle (Washington). She noticed that her mother does not read her messages and does not send her her progress in guessing the word in the Wordle game.

“I didn’t send my eldest daughter Wordle’s answer in the morning, and this confused her,” the hostage explained.

The press release said that the police officers who arrived saw a broken window in the house and eventually found the woman being held in the basement. The officers determined that she was not physically hurt.

They found the suspect on the second floor of the house. The perpetrator was armed with several knives, so additional forces were needed to arrest him. The suspect was subsequently detained and taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Police said the detainee probably took off his clothes before breaking into the house.

“After that, the subject woke the victim and demanded that she help him. The subject threatened the woman. He collected all the phones in the house in order to deprive her of the ability to communicate with anyone, the police said in a statement. “The detainee then placed the victim in a bathroom in the basement and locked the door with a chair.”

The suspect was charged with multiple felonies, including home invasion with a dangerous weapon, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Investigators believe that the victim and the suspect had not previously been in contact and were not connected in any way.
