Poland renamed Russian Kaliningrad: now it is Krulewets

The Governmental Committee for the Standardization of Geographical Names in Warsaw (Poland) recommended using the Polish name Krulewiec for Russian Kaliningrad. The change went into effect May 9th. The edition told in more detail Voice of America.

The Polish Committee stated that the Russian name of the city is "artificial and not related to the history of the place". The commission considered that the Russian name of the city is "an imposed element of the symbolic space of Russia."

The Minister of Development and Technology of Poland, Waldemar Buda, said that the city is located near the borders of Poland, but his name belongs to "a criminal, guilty, including in issuing a decree on the massacre of Poles" (meaning the Katyn massacre).

The decision states that "no state can be forced to use names in its native language that are unacceptable to it." The Polish government recommends calling the Kalingrad region Krulevetskaya, this name has not been used in Polish before. The decision was approved by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Kaliningrad was founded in 1255 and at various times was controlled by Poland, the Teutonic Order, Prussia and united Germany. The city has several names that have been used in different languages.

The city was annexed to the Soviet Union following the results of World War II as part of the division with Poland of East Prussia torn away from Germany. Before the annexation, it was called Königsberg. In addition to him, the USSR got Memel (now Klaipeda in Lithuania). Poland - Danzig (now Gdansk).
