The police edited the photo of the robber before identification, because of this they can close the case

The man who is accused of robbing in Oregon wants to close the case against him because the police removed the tattoo from his photo and then showed the witnesses to the crime.

Law enforcement officers admit that using a computer program they removed tattoos from the face of 50-year-old Lamont Allen. This was allegedly done so that his picture does not stand out among the pictures of other suspects who were shown to witnesses.

Allen was detained on charges of four robberies in the Portland area in 2017.

The federal court is currently considering this case and must decide whether law enforcement officers had the legal right to use the edited photo.

Why was the tattoo removed?

The police released several images of the robber made by a surveillance camera and asked for help in identifying the offender.

Subsequently, an anonymous informant contacted law enforcement and said that in his opinion, the man in the photo is Lamont Allen.

During the investigation, witnesses to the robberies were shown a selection of photographs of several people - including Allen - and asked to identify the robber among them.

So that the portrait of Allen does not stand out among other pictures, they decided to remove tattoos from him.

Allen's lawyer learned last month that the photo had been edited. He said this was done intentionally - to make his client look more like the man in the surveillance camera images.

The assistant prosecutor objected to this, that Allen could put makeup on his face before the crime, so there are no tattoos on these photos, and law enforcement officers actually did the same, but with a digital method.

“These procedures were smart and appropriate,” the assistant prosecutor said.

Judge Mark Hernandez will soon issue a verdict on whether the edited photographs could be used during identification.
