Why no one will fire the New York Times editor for dozens of racist tweets addressed to whites
The editors took the side of the girl.
The journalist of The Verge Sarah Jeong announced the move to The New York Times. After that, her old racist posts towards white people were found on Twitter and demanded to be fired. However, the editorial staff of the NYT said it took the side of the girl and refused to dismiss her.
“Meet the new member of the New York Times. I would say that these tweets were part of her resume, which she sent when she came to work. ”
Users mentioned several Jeong tweets as examples. In them, she compared the behavior of white people on the Internet with dogs writing to fire hydrants, and said that white people "will soon die out because they stop breeding." She deleted many tweets later.
Twitter users demanded Jeong being fired from the NYT because of racism. The editors took the side of the girl, refusing to dismiss her.
The publication explained Jeong's behavior as a form of self-defense: she wrote tweets in the same rhetoric in which her pursuers did. However, the NYT editors noted that they would not tolerate such records from employees.
After that, the Vox edition (included in the same holding as The Verge, where Jeong worked) published an article explaining why the girl’s tweets cannot be considered racism. The authors noted that the words of Jeong were understood literally, although, for example, she did not call for genocide by posting a tweet with the hashtag “cancelwhitepeople” (cancel white people).
2 August edition of The Verge, where Jeong is still working, published an open letter. The team supported the decision of the NYT and spoke out against the prosecution of colleagues.
According to the editors of the publication, Jeong's tweets were intentionally “ripped out of context” in order to insult her unhindered. The editors noted that such attacks are part of a widespread campaign to harass journalists, which has recently unfolded.
Trolls and pursuers want us, the Times and other publications to spend time discussing their negative agenda. They find tweets and other statements and take them out of context, because they want to separate us and attack the journalists one by one. Their strategy is to divide and win, forcing the editorial staff to get rid of their colleagues one at a time. This is not a bona fide conversation, but intimidation.
