Couple in Hawaii billed $18 for electricity: company says family owns streetlights

Last month, a Hawaiian couple was billed a whopping $18 in electricity bills after Hawaiian Electric said they were responsible for paying for streetlights in their area. FOXNews.

Desha-Ann and Rashan Kealoha, who live in Wayanaka, received a letter from Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) on January 27, 2022, stating that they were the legal owners of the street and were therefore liable for the outstanding balance of $17 due to "several years of unpaid bills".

“Hawaiian Electric recently learned that you both own Halemaluhia Place,” HECO said in the letter, according to the report. “Because you own the street on which the street lights are located, Hawaiian Electric believes that you are responsible for paying for the electricity supplied to those street lights.”

“Yes, I was shocked, stunned and confused, but still hopeful that there was some kind of solution to this problem,” Desha-Ann Kealoha said. “My husband has a more colorful vocabulary—he was upset.”

HECO also provided documentation showing which of the street lights, which had been running for several years without any payment to the company, were believed to have belonged to the couple.

“During the course of its review, Hawaiian Electric learned that some of these accounts did not have existing customers,” the letter said. “One of these reports involves street lights on Halemaluhia Place.”

Desha-Ann Kealoha said that this was the first time she had heard that the light was hers and her husband's. She contacted her realtor, who subsequently contacted the escrow office.

A spokesman for the electric company said he does not expect the couple to pay the remaining amount, but is working with them and the city to find someone who should be held responsible for paying the five-figure sum.

“We are working with all parties and have spoken to the Kealohs. We want to reassure them that we do not expect them to pay an unpaid bill. Our goal is to determine who owns the street where the streetlights are located so that the bill can be paid in the future,” spokeswoman Shannon Tangonan said.

Desha-Ann Kealoha is also looking for someone else to cover the payment.

“This is definitely a common challenge that I hope can be solved! - she said . - This shouldn't be my problem. I don’t know who made the mistake here, but it’s beyond my control.”
