Ilon Mask proposed to drop thermonuclear bombs on Mars
The founder of the companies SpaceX and Tesla proposed to drop thermonuclear bombs on the poles of Mars in order to heat the surface of the planet and make it suitable for life. He said this in a show by Stephen Colbert on CBS.
The poles of Mars are covered with water ice and frozen carbon dioxide. Theoretically, the explosion of thermonuclear charges will cause evaporation and the formation of an atmosphere sufficiently dense for the greenhouse effect to appear and to heat the surface of the planet.
Astrophysicist Michael Shara, in an NBC News commentary, called the Mask proposal "in principle, a smart idea." At the same time, the scientist noted that no one is fully aware of whether it will work or not.
NASA refused to support the idea of Mask, saying that the agency is studying the solar system in its current form and seeks not to disturb the state of the planets under study.
