Obama hails Carter’s post as secretary of defense

US President Barack Obama welcomed the decision of the US Senate to approve Ashton Carter’s candidature as Secretary of Defense.

In a statement issued by the White House almost immediately after the vote, the head of state expressed confidence that "Carter will play a key role as we work with Congress to find a more responsible approach to defense spending." He believes this will “make operations more effective, maintain combat readiness and maintain faith among American military personnel.”

On Thursday, Carter’s candidacy was supported by the Senator 93, only five opposed.
