34 U.S. military injured in Iranian shelling

The Pentagon said that as a result of Iran’s shelling of US military bases, 34 US troops in Iraq received traumatic brain injuries of varying severity, reports with the BBC.

The official of the US Department of Defense Jonathan Hoffman told reporters that eight of the victims were sent to America for treatment, nine are being treated in Germany.

Another 16 soldiers were treated in Iraq, one in Kuwait. They have now returned to service, American officials say.

8 January Iran shelled two US military bases in Iraq, in al-Assad and Erbil, in retaliation for the assassination of influential General Kassem Suleimani. He died in Baghdad on January 3 as a result of an American drone strike.

Immediately after the Iranian shelling, US President Donald Trump said that there were no casualties among the Americans. It was the absence of victims that he called the reason why he decided not to respond to Iran with new blows.

The Pentagon said last week that 11 people were hospitalized after Iranian strokes with symptoms of concussion.

Now Hoffman said that for several days after January 8, US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper did not know about the injured US military.

At the recent economic forum in Davos, Trump was asked why Washington did not talk about the wounded. He replied, “I heard they had headaches and some other things. But I can report that there was nothing serious there.”

When asked about possible traumatic brain injuries, Trump said, "I don't think these are very serious injuries compared to what I've seen."

The American Association of Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan criticized the Trump administration for not reporting the consequences of the shelling for so long.

“This is very important,” said association founder Paul Rickenhoff. “The American people have a right to trust that the government will share information about our sons and daughters who are at risk.” There is nothing more serious and sacred."

The US Army reports that traumatic brain injuries are common in conflict zones. Their most common cause is exposure to a shock wave.
