The team from Arkansas Zopherus of Rogers won the first place in the NASA competition for the development of housing for astronauts on Mars 3D-Printed Habitat Centennial Challenge, writes RIA News.

According to their idea, the robots will gather the necessary resources for the construction of housing directly on Mars, after which the house can be printed using 3D printers. The authors argue that this technology will increase the area of ​​the building, and with it the number of residents.

Their settlement project resembles a honeycomb. Hexagonal two-story house-capsules will be built from concrete analog. This mixture must withstand the cold and not let radiation inside the houses. All houses will be connected with each other, and in the settlement there will be a common compartment for communication and joint work of settlers. Winners received $ 20 957,95.

The authors of the second draft AI. SpaceFactory from New York offered a house in the form of a cylinder, on four floors of which it is supposed to locate residential and office space. The team received $ 20,957.24.

The third project from the Kahn-Yates of Jackson team from Mississippi is interesting because here a garden covered by a protective dome is provided for the settlers. There is a garage and the first laboratory on the 1 floor, a second laboratory and kitchen on 2, bedrooms on the 3, and a recreation room on 4. The team received a cash prize of $ 20,622.74.

In the fourth project, the engineers at SEArch + / Apis Cor from New York found a balance between the natural lighting of the dwellings and the protection from radiation. This is achieved by the thoughtful placement of the rooms. They also provided a garden. Construction of the complex takes place in 8 stages, and materials for its manufacture, as well as in the first project, are mined from the surface of the Red Planet. The prize for this team was $ 19,580.97.

And in fifth place is the Northwestern University of Evanston project from Illinois. The authors presented a domed building, divided inside into two parts: bedrooms and office space. The main disadvantage of the judges was that the domed shape of the building leaves too much unoccupied space. The team received $ 17,881.10.

The creators of the five best projects divided the prize fund in the amount of one hundred thousand dollars.

The competition was announced in 2014 year, 18 teams from all over the world took part in it. The organizers hope that its participants will be able to bring humanity closer to the colonization of new planets.

There were strict requirements for the projects. Housing must have an area of ​​300 square. m., it should be all the conditions for a comfortable stay of four people during the year. Of course, they took into account the materials from which it was proposed to build the building, and infrastructure.

Recall, NASA partners are developing a super-heavy rocket SLS (Space Launch System) and the Orion manned spacecraft. The first flight to Mars is scheduled for 2030-s.
