An ice floe broke off on a lake in Ohio, on which there were 18 people: rescuers had to be involved
The US Coast Guard said that on February 6, eighteen people were rescued from drifting ice on Lake Erie. PIX11.
An ice floe was reported to have broken off around 13:00 p.m. near Catawba Island, Ohio, while people were snowmobiling. Soon, rescuers and a volunteer with an inflatable boat arrived at the scene. The helicopter was able to pull seven people off the ice, the rest boarded Coast Guard boats and a volunteer's boat.
Authorities said no one needed medical attention.
On February 5, the National Weather Service warned the public to stay away from the ice because there is a strong possibility that it will break off and drift towards Canada.
“There is no such thing as safe ice, but people can reduce their risks,” said Lieutenant J.G. Jeremiah.

This is stated in a statement by Schissel of the Detroit Coast Guard: “Always be sure to let someone know where you are going and when you intend to return. Ice in the Great Lakes is unpredictable and conditions can change quickly.”
An eyewitness sent a photo of a large crack in the ice that he saw during a flight from Cleveland to Detroit on February 5th.
