A man froze to death on Coney Island waterfront
The body of an 77-year-old New Yorker was discovered early in the morning on Coney Island, Brooklyn, next to an amusement park. A passerby noticed a man lying motionless on his back and called 911 service. However, the arriving doctors only determined that the elderly person is dead.
Representatives of law enforcement agencies found it difficult to say how long the deceased spent in the cold. No traces of violence were found on his body.
The man’s identity was established later. It turned out to be Bei-Ping Wen, a 77-year-old immigrant from China, writes Daily News. He lived in Coney Island for the last 15 years, but often visited friends and relatives in Chinatown, Manhattan. Apparently, in the late evening he was returning home after a trip to Chinatown, but he did not get to his apartment.
Relatives told investigators that Wen was suffering from diabetes and other chronic diseases. Probably he felt bad, but no one helped him, and, as a result, an elderly man froze to death on the embankment.
The air temperature in New York last night fell to -17 degrees Celsius (about + 1 degrees Fahrenheit), which is extremely unusual for New York winters.
