Billionaire wants to adopt his gardener and leave a $12 billion inheritance

The heir to French fashion house Hermès wants to give half of his $12 billion fortune to his gardener, reports Entrepreneur.

Nicolas Puech, 80, grandson of the Hermès founder, has announced a bold plan to adopt his 51-year-old former gardener and handyman to bequeath his $12 billion fortune to him. Puech owns 5,7% of the company.

According to the Swiss newspaper Tribune de Genève, the reclusive Puech communicates little with his family. Lonely and childless, he considers the gardener (whose name is not revealed) to be his relative. Little is known about the gardener, other than that he comes from “a humble Moroccan family” and has a Spanish wife and two children.

Puech has already handed over the keys to the villa in Montreux to his future relative. A former gardener has gained control of real estate worth almost $6 million, reports Snob.

Change of decision

Puech previously promised to donate his money to his anti-disinformation fund, Isocrates, which he created in 2011. But earlier this year he changed his mind, sending the foundation a “handwritten note” expressing his wishes for a new successor. This news shocked the entire public. Now the fund's management is trying to challenge the billionaire's actions. The entrepreneur has already hired lawyers to help him solve this problem.

With no direct heirs to his name, the billionaire could get away with his plan. But not without serious legal obstacles. According to the Tribune de Genève, adopting an adult child in Switzerland is difficult—add to that the adoptee can earn billions, and it becomes a high-stakes battle.

Enmity

This is not the first time Puech has clashed with his family. In 2014, he left the Hermès board of directors. But he kept his shares, making him one of the richest people in Switzerland. According to El Pais, he now lives in a mansion with 66 other residents in La Foulie.
