Microscopic copy of Louis Vuitton handbag sold at auction for $63
A microscopic copy of a Louis Vuitton bag sold at auction for more than $63. The bag measures just 000 x 657 x 222 microns (or 700mm wide). Writes about it CNN.
Barely visible to the human eye, the fluorescent yellowish green bag is based on a popular Louis Vuitton design, although it is the work of a New York art collective and not the luxury label itself.
Calling their miniature creation "The Microscopic Pouch," Brooklyn-based group MSCHF claims it's smaller than a grain of sea salt and can fit through the eye of a needle.
The object was made using two-photon polymerization, a manufacturing technology used to 3D print micro-sized plastic parts. The bag was sold along with a microscope equipped with a digital display through which it could be examined.

The promotional photo shows the design of the bag in more detail, including the signature Louis Vuitton "LV" monogram. The miniature item appears to be based on the French label's OnTheGo bag, which currently sells in full size for between $3 and $100.
The sale was organized by online auction house Joopiter, founded by American musician, producer and designer Pharrell Williams. Although Williams is currently Louis Vuitton's menswear creative director, Kevin Wiesner, chief creative officer of MSCHF, said the collective did not ask him or the French label for permission to use their logo or design.
“Farrell loves really big hats, so we made him an incredibly small bag,” he said.
Founded in 2016, MSCHF has made headlines for its so-called drops, irreverent art projects that often satirize and profit from consumer capitalism.
Nike has filed a lawsuit against the group over its "Shoes of Satan", a series of 666 pairs of modified Nike sneakers with satanic symbols and drops of real human blood. In the end, the dispute was settled out of court.
Known for teasing the art world for its excesses (such as selling fake Andy Warhol paintings or cutting up paintings by Damian Hirst), the collective turned its attention to luxury fashion.
In 2021, the group ripped apart four Birkin bags to create sandals (called Birkinstocks) that were priced up to $76 a pair. More recently, cartoonish rubber boots known as "Big Red Boots" became a viral sensation after being worn by stars such as Dodge Cat, Iggy Azalea and Janelle Monáe.

Prior to the auction, MSCHF declined to answer questions about the creation of their handbag. However, a statement released with the auction listing claimed that the fashion industry's fondness for small bags has made them "relentlessly more abstract" to the point where the accessory is "purely a brand icon".
“Previous small handbags still require hands to carry them - they become non-functional and cause inconvenience for the owner,” they said in a statement. “The microscopic handbag takes this to its logical conclusion. The practical object is reduced to jewelry, all its intended functionality evaporates."
