In New York, will increase the tax and the price of cigarettes

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a package of bills that are designed to reduce the number of smokers to 160 000 by 2020, the mayor’s press service reports.

Despite the fact that the percentage of smokers from 2003 was reduced from 21,5% to 14,3%, 900 000 smokers still live in the city. The introduction of new bills should reduce this percentage to 12%.

So, new bills increase minimum prices for all tobacco products ($ 13 per pack of cigarettes), 10% local tobacco tax is imposed, except cigarettes, increase the license fee for tobacco dealers, reduce the number of cigarette dealers and prohibit the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in pharmacies. Forced licensing of e-cigarette vendors and related products is also being introduced. More than 10 smoking people will be prevented from being in public places. All residential buildings should develop a smoking policy and familiarize current and future tenants. The authors of these bills were Cory Johnson, Brad Lander, Fernando Cabrera, Richie Torres and James Wacca.

The mayor signed these initiatives 25 August 2017 of the year. “Although tobacco is the leading cause of premature death throughout the country, Big Tobacco will stop at nothing to continue to attract people to these deadly products. We will not allow their greed to kill New Yorkers. These new laws will not only help reduce the number of smokers in our city, but also save lives,” said Mayor Bill De Blasio.

According to the American Heart Association, 12 kills thousands of New Yorkers every year from the influence of tobacco. In addition, about 9 thousands of commercial outlets have a license for the sale of tobacco products in the metropolis, one third of them are located within 150 radius from the schools.

The authorities of New York have been campaigning against smoking for the first year. Even under the former mayor of the city, Michael Bloomberg, a ban on smoking in public places was introduced in the megalopolis - not only in cafes and restaurants, but also in city parks and on beaches. In addition, in New York, there is a ban on the sale of tobacco products to persons younger than 21.
