'May grayness' turned into 'June gloom': weather anomaly took away sunny days from California

According to National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologist Alex Tardy, during a month known locally for its gray color, San Diego had 10 days without sunshine and 8 days with partial clouds (which are rated at a cloud level of 8 out of 10) . Even days considered "clear" by the NWS had at least some cloud cover.

The number of cloudy days this year is "well above average" for San Diego, which typically has around 58% cloud cover during the month. This year, the average cloud coverage of the sky was 82%.

San Diego, known for its beaches and sunny weather, was one of the cloudiest places in the continental US last month. The only place with more cloudiness was a remote city in Alaska, but Utqiagvik's 5000 residents may be more accustomed to sunless days. This year, they saw sunlight for the first time on the 65th day of the new year.

Cloud cover forms when surface water temperatures along the west coast are much colder than the air. Air in contact with water cools to form point clouds, NWS says. This can happen near any large body of water, but here in Southern California people refer to this phenomenon as "May Grey" and "June Gloom".

"May and June are the months in San Diego County when we typically see the most cloud cover and the least sun," meteorologist Sheena Parvin said.

So far, San Diego continues to be affected by this marine layer during the first week of June, Parvin said.

Another factor contributing to the above-average cloud cover is an active winter weather season, which created an anomaly between the cold Pacific and warm weather systems over Canada and caused the deep sea layer to expand and rise, Tardy said.

There is not much sunshine in San Diego, so the temperature in San Diego was also below average. Tardy said temperatures were about 2,3 degrees cooler than the 30-year average.
