Personal experience of an immigrant: what and how they teach in American schools

Before leaving for the United States, friends and acquaintances frightened a Russian-speaking woman with the low quality of school education in America, but she, using the example of her child, who is now studying in the 6th grade of middle school, showed that this is not so, reports Leprechaun.

The woman was told that children in America go through the multiplication table and simple equations before high school. But on the example of her child, the mother saw that the education system is really different, but good at the same time.

“The schedule is the same every day: English, science, social work, math, physical education, then two subjects that the student chooses for himself,” she says.

Her child has additional English and drawing.

“The English language is our literature, language, ethics and fundamentals of psychology together. Every week they read a book, discuss, and write essays. All the exercises we did in Russian were about commas, revolutions, etc. included in the terms of the essay. They analyze motivations, how different feelings arise, etc. This month on the program: “The Devil’s Arithmetic”, “The Curious Case of Jekyll and Hyde”, “The Metamorphosis” (Kafka), “War of the Worlds,” says the woman.

Science is physics, chemistry, biology and ecology together, how everything works and interacts systematically, as the student's mother describes the school curriculum.

“For example, the physics of light, then the chemistry of photosynthesis, then about the plant world, then why smog is harmful. Since everything is studied in interconnection, there are no repetitions, it is better absorbed and saves time, and develops systematic thinking,” she says.

She says that mathematics in their school is algebra and geometry together. All initial levels - areas, simple matrices, etc. All assignments are practice related.

“For example, calculations of areas are taught using abstract figures like ours, and tasks like calculating how much paint is needed to paint the walls of a room, the ceiling? How much carpet is there for the floor? Don't forget to subtract the area of ​​windows and doors. Or figure out how many gallons of water are in a round pool, etc. The section on interest begins with tasks on how to calculate taxes and the final price of an item or how much to tip and ends with calculating mortgage payments,” she says.

She describes the social sciences at her child's school as a synthesis of subjects like history, sociology, and economics together. How everything affects each other.

“American physical education is brutal! Coach Miss Shelton is a former Marine. First, general physical training, then training in team sports. The series Glee came to me as if in reality - when Miss Shelton trolls science teacher Mr. Ganders,” says the woman.

She notes that the art class is wonderful. Now children are taught the laws of perspective. The equipment is like in a good art school.
