Lavrov threatened the US with a “harsh response”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the decision of the United States close the Russian consulate general in San Francisco and two other diplomatic facilities, Russia will “respond” as soon as it has completed its analysis of the detailed note received on August 31. He stated this at a meeting with students at MGIMO.

Responding to a question from a MGIMO student about Russian-American relations, Lavrov said that Russia would “respond toughly” to actions detrimental to it “absolutely out of the blue” and dictated by the desire to spoil relations between the two countries.

At the same time, according to Lavrov, "the reaction should be such that you, in addition to the damage done to you, yourself still do not harm yourself."

The minister stressed that, in his opinion, US President Donald Trump is interested in improving relations with Russia, however, his administration is trying to “fry for every reason” and “chop up”, and sanctions actions are “imposed” on Trump by the US Congress.

“I will note that the whole story with the exchange, with the sanctions attacks was not started by us, but by the administration of Barack Obama. It is exactly with the aim to undermine Russian-American relations and not to allow US President Donald Trump to enter this path of his presidency with constructive proposals, ”said Lavrov.

Recall 31 August, the United States unexpectedly ordered to close the Russian consulate in San Francisco, as well as diplomatic facilities in Washington and New York during 48 hours, which further exacerbated tensions between the two countries.

The US explained that now each of the countries will have three consulates in the territory of the second country. This, as stated in the State Department, corresponds to the principle of parity, under which Russia in July demanded to equalize the number of employees of diplomatic establishments in two countries, reducing the number of American employees by 755 people.

Russia demanded that the United States reduce the number of employees of diplomatic institutions after Congress adopted new sanctions against the Russian Federation. The law, in particular, prohibited the US President to withdraw sanctions from Russia without the consent of the parliament.
