Criminal America: what crimes are committed in the United States

According to the FBI, after two consecutive years of increase in violent crime in the country, their number decreased by 0,2 percent in 2017 year compared with data for 2016 year. Property crimes fell by 3,0 percent. Federal Bureau of Investigation told what else has changed in the country for the year.

According to statistics, in 2017, 382,9 crimes were recorded for 100 000 residents, and the estimated share of crimes related to property was 2 362,2 crimes for 100 000 residents. Violent crime rate decreased by 0,9 percent compared to 2016 year; property crime declined by 3,6 percent.

These and additional data are presented in the release of the FBI annual report “Crime in the United States of America " for 2017 year. The publication is a statistical compilation of data on crimes, arrests and police officers reported by law enforcement agencies voluntarily participating in the FBI Crime Prevention Program (UCR).

The UCR program collects information about crimes reported by law enforcement agencies in relation to violent crimes involving murder, rape, robbery and aggravated attacks, as well as property crimes related to burglary, theft, car theft and arson.

The program also collects arrest data for the crimes listed above plus 20 crimes, which include all other crimes, with the exception of traffic offenses.

From 18 547 cities, counties, universities and colleges, federal agencies entitled to participate in the UCR Program, 16 655 reported data in 2017 year.

Brief summary:

• In 2017, 1 247 321 violent crime was registered. The number of crimes related to the robbery decreased by 4,0 percent, and the number of crimes related to the murder decreased by 0,7 percent compared to estimates in 2016 year. The number of crimes related to aggravated assault and rape increased by 1,0 percent and 2,5 percent, respectively.
• Throughout the country, there were 7 694 086 property crimes. Estimated figures for two of the three property crimes showed a decrease compared with estimates for the previous year. Theft decreased by 2,2 percent, but car thefts increased by 0,8 percent.
• In the aggregate, victims of property crimes (with the exception of arson) suffered losses of $ 15,3 billion in 2017.
• The FBI estimates that law enforcement agencies across the country in 2017 made 10,6 million arrests (with the exception of traffic violations).
• The level of arrests for violent crime was 160,7 per 100 000 residents; The level of arrest for property crime was 388,7 per 100 000 residents.
• Of property related crimes, the level of arrest for burglary was 61,7 per 100 000 residents; 296,0 theft; and vehicle theft, 28.2. The level of arrest for arson was 2,8 per 100 000 residents.
• In 2017, 13 law enforcement agencies submitted their staffing schedules to the FBI. These agencies reported that, as of October 128, 31, they employed a total of 2017 officers and 670 civilians—a rate of 279 officers per 286 residents.
