Supermoon-2019: when and how to look in New York

Lovers of observing heavenly bodies, there is good news for you! On February 19, you will be able to see the largest Moon of 2019 in the sky - it is also called the “super snow” Moon.

The full moon in February is called “super snowy” due to the snowfalls that are natural for this time of year, writes Fox News.

A super-moon occurs when the moon’s orbit brings it to its minimum distance from the earth during a full moon.

“When the full Moon appears at perigee [closest point to Earth], it becomes a little brighter and larger than normal, and that’s when we get a ‘supermoon,’” explains NASA on its website, noting that this word was coined in 1979.

On February 19, the Moon will be its closest to Earth this year, at a distance of 221 miles (734 kilometers).

If you are watching this phenomenon from New York, get ready to look at the sky, starting from 17: 46 on February 19 and before 7: on 35 in the morning on February 20, reports the US Naval Observatory.

The moon appears especially large when it is close to the horizon, an effect achieved through an optical illusion.

Although the moon will be closest to Earth in the 2019 year, this is the full moon won't be as bright as last month's blood moonwhen the natural satellite of Earth acquired a stunning reddish tint. This celestial phenomenon was the only total lunar eclipse 2019 of the year and caused a lot of noise.
