Catherine Deneuve defends the “right” of men to harass women

French actress Catherine Deneuve and about 100 other famous French women condemned the campaign against sexual harassment launched in the United States, saying that men “have the right to molest women.”

In an open letter, the French called the campaign against sexual harassment “new puritanism”, reports with the BBC.

Among the women who signed the letter are writers, actresses and scientists.

The campaign against harassment unfolded on social networks after several dozen actresses made public statements about sexual harassment by famous Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. The accusations against him were voiced by such Hollywood stars as Salma Hayek, Rose McGowan, Asia Argento, Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow.

The producer himself categorically denies having sex with women without their consent.

The French women who signed the open letter express regret that the Weinstein scandal has sparked a wave of accusations against other men. In their opinion, the “public trial” of those against whom such accusations have been made occurs without proper reasoning and clarification of the real circumstances of the incidents of which they are accused.

“Men have been forced to give up their jobs just because they touched someone's knee or tried to kiss someone. Violence is a crime, but an attempt at seduction, even persistent and rude, is not a crime,” the open letter says.

The women who signed the letter claim that “a new wave of Puritanism is sweeping the world.”

According to French women, instead of attacking anyone with accusations, it is necessary to discuss the problem of abuse of power by some men.

The authors of the letter argue that such an approach to the problem, which was chosen in the United States, suggests treating the woman as a weak being and an eternal victim.

“As women, we do not want to be part of a feminism that, instead of condemning the abuse of power, fosters hostility towards men and sexuality,” the letter said.

One of the first to respond to an open letter was the Italian actress Asia Argento, who accuses Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment.

In its Twitter she wrote: "Deneuve and other women tell the world how their internalized misogyny has lobotomized them completely and irrevocably."

Catherine Deneuve also opposed the campaign #MeToo in social networks. In her opinion, the participants of this campaign are simply trying to shame the men accused of harassment.
