California officially recognized third floor

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed a new law that allows state residents to specify the third gender in official documents. The Hill.

The law, which is one of the top priorities of citizen rights protection groups, also makes it possible for transgender people to change their identification in birth certificates or driving licenses.

“The Gender Recognition Act will eliminate unnecessary stress and anxiety for many Californians, and it demonstrates our state's continued embrace of LGBT civil rights,” said Senator Toni Atkins, who authored the bill.

The measure requires the California registrar to issue a new birth certificate to those born in the state and who want to identify themselves as the third half of the “intersex”.

People will no longer need to provide a certificate from the doctor confirming the operation and the treatment completed, when applying for a job.

Some religious conservative groups opposing transgender rights have criticized this measure.

“This new law supports transsexuality when science, health, logic and love tell us it is wrong,” said Randy Thomasson, who heads the conservative group SaveCalifornia.com. “Science and the word of God agree that you are either a man or a woman, and not in between.”

California is the first state to allow third-generation birth certificates. Oregon and Washington, DC, also allow residents identify themselves as being other than a man or a woman on their driving license. A similar measure is pending in New York.
