In California, 9 New Laws for Women and Children
California will improve employee protection against job loss for 2,7 million people. Now workers can take 12 weeks of parental leave without fear of losing their job. He writes about it SF Chronicle.
The new law, which protects parents, was one of nine bills signed on Thursday by the governor of Jerry Brown. All of them are aimed at improving the lives of women and children.
Other bills give diapers subsidies, and schools are obligated to give pads and tampons to low-income students or from low-income families for free.
“The bills passed today will make a real difference for women, children and families,” Brown said at a news conference attended by some of the Capitol's most powerful women.
Senator Hanna-Beth Jackson's SB63 bill allows new mothers and fathers to get 12 weeks off working in small companies. Last year, Brown vetoed a similar measure.
Companies with 50 or more are already required to provide 12 weeks off. SB63 requires businesses from 20 to 49 employees to offer parental leave.
The bill does not require payment of parental leave. Employees already pay for family care in the state, but often have difficulty accessing the program because they are afraid of losing their job if they go on vacation.
“We know that when mothers spend those critical first 12 weeks with their newborns, it reduces postpartum depression by a third,” Jackson said.
Brown signed the AB10 bill for Christina Garcia, which schools in sixth grade and higher need and receive 1-level funding for low-income students. Schools will now provide free tampons and pads, at least in the toilets on campus. Many schools already provide free feminine hygiene products, but Garcia said campuses should pay more attention to this.
