The streets are blocked off by the police, and yellow taxis wait patiently for a mysterious crowd of people to pass by, holding candles and shouting “Christ is Risen”! This is exactly what the procession around the St. Nicholas Cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church looks like every year. Quite an unusual picture, I must say. It was surprising to me that the majority of those walking in the religious procession were not grandmothers in headscarves at all, but quite fashionably dressed young people. It also seemed to me that there were quite a lot of Americans. Some came out of curiosity, while others were brought by a Russian girl or wife to introduce them to the traditions of their country.”

The procession begins exactly at midnight on the night of 27 on 28 April.

More: The Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Vladimir invites parishioners to celebrate the bright Easter holiday.

You can consecrate Easter cakes and Easter on Saturday, from 13: 00 to 17: 00. The Easter Liturgy will begin at midnight exactly. With 10: 00, the morning service will be held, after which the Easter cakes will be consecrated again.

When: Saturday-Sunday, 27-28 April

Where: 2016 Voorhies Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11235

More: The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is the main Orthodox church in Brooklyn. Parishioners will be able to bless Easter cakes, take part in the religious procession and listen to the Easter service.

Schedule of Easter events at St. John the Baptist Cathedral:

• On Saturday, April 27, the consecration of Easter cakes will take place from 12:00 to 22:00 (without a break).
• Reading the Acts of the Holy Apostles in front of the Shroud in 18: 00.
• Vigil with the reading of the Canon of Great Saturday with 23: 00.
• Procession in 23: 30.
• Easter Matins and Divine Liturgy (midnight).
  
• Consecration of Easter cakes after the liturgy (in 3: 00) and on Easter Day from 9: 00 to 16: 00 (without interruption).
• Easter Vespers and Matins in 16: 00 28 April.
