The coffin with the body of the senator was placed in the Arizona Capitol of August 29, where family members said goodbye to him. On Thursday, the coffin was transferred to a church in Phoenix, where the memorial service was held.

It was attended by former US Vice President Joe Biden, former Vice President Dan Quail, 24 acting US senators from both parties, four former senators and other well-known politicians.

Biden: John's story is American history

One of the speakers at the ceremony was the ex-vice president Joe Biden.

“John's story is an American story, it's not hyperbole, it's an American story based on respect and decency, on fundamental fairness. On the intolerance of abuse of power,” Biden said.

He added: “John understood that America was primarily an idea. Daring and risky, organized around ideals. ”

Biden is confident that the legacy of McCain will inspire generations of future leaders.

The vice president emphasized that "even though John is not with us, he left us with some pretty clear instructions: 'Always believe in the growth and greatness of America.'"

Joe Biden and the cancer losses

The former vice president said that he would trust McCain with his life, "and I think he would trust me with his own."

Biden noted that "there are times when life can be so cruel, and pain so blinding that it is difficult to see anything else." Among such cases, he attributed cancer, glioblastoma, which claimed the lives of his friend, former Senator Ted Kennedy, and Biden Bo's son.

“It’s cruel and unforgiving. But the world now shares with us the pain of John’s death,” Biden said, noting that he had received numerous calls, letters and messages of condolences from around the world and the United States.

A former US vice president called McCain a “brother.”

“My name is Joe Biden, I'm a Democrat, and I love John McCain. I always thought of John as a brother, with a lot of family squabbles,” he said, recalling his wars of words in the Senate with the late politician.

Biden said that despite all the quarrels, they were both optimistic and believed in America and its future.

Larry Fitzgerald Jr., a famous American football player, also spoke at the ceremony.

“He judged them on the merits of their characters and the content of their hearts,” the athlete said.

After a speech by several more politicians and friends of McCain, members of the National Guard carried the coffin from the church to the song of Frank Sinatra “My Way”.

McCain himself planned his funeral and for some reason chose to be accompanied on his last journey by a song that played during the first official dance at President Donald Trump’s inaugural ball, which was not invited to memorial events.
