How and why the founder of Amazon has been building a clock on 10 000 years. VIDEO
The richest man in the world, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, shared a short video with the construction of a huge mechanical watch, which 10 000 must have worked for years.
For the implementation of this project, Bezos donated $ 42 million, and also allocated a plot in the mountains of Texas in the territory belonging to his space company. Blue Origin, writes AIN.
The company owns more than 770 km² of land.

A huge mechanism, known as Clock of the Long Now - the result of the work of a non-profit organization Long Now Foundation. The foundation promotes “long-term” thinking and suggests thinking about cultural initiatives for the next ten thousand years. To emphasize this chronology, Long Now uses five-digit dates (for example, writes 02018 instead of 2018 a year).
The idea of the watch belongs to Danny Hills, the founder Long Now. He first wrote about it in one of the issues of the magazine Wired for 1995 year. Prototypes appeared in 2007, and in 2011, the project received financial support from Jeff Bezos. As conceived by the creator, the mechanical clock will “tick” once a year, and due to its reliable construction and remoteness, they will not become a victim of destruction or vandalism. They are buried at a depth of 150 meters. The nearest airport, according to Bezos, is a few hours away by car. Visitors who (possibly) in the future will be allowed to inspect will also have to climb the cable car to a height of more than 600 meters.
Bezos likes the idea as another reason to think about the future:
We humans have become so technologically advanced that in some respects are dangerous to ourselves. It is becoming increasingly important for humanity to look at the long-term prospects for the future.
In addition, in one of the interviews, he tried to predict that he would see the device built on his money:
During the life of these hours, the United States will cease to exist. Civilizations will appear and die. There will be new government systems. You can not imagine the world - and no one can - that this watch is going to survive.
Bezos is not the only public figure involved in the work on the chronometer Long Now. The construction also involved the composer Brian Eno, as well as writers Kevin Kelly and Steward Brand. About when the whole mechanism will be assembled is still unknown.
