This summer, part of the Rockaway beach will be closed due to the lack of sand, representatives of the parks said.

Swimmers and sunbathing will be barred from being in between Beach 91st and Beach 102nd. Authorities took such measures to protect the dunes and visitors after Sandy devastated the area in 2012.

Queens political leaders were outraged by the decision to partially close the beach.

“This will significantly harm the local community and economy of Queens during the vital tourism season,” the president said Queens borough Melinda Katz. — Close 12 blocks of beach Rockaway unacceptable and Rockaway deserves better. ”

Assembly member Stacy Faffer Amato was also outraged.

“I am completely opposed to the city’s plan to close part of our beach right before Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer,” she said.

The city explained that it had no choice, and added that about 4,5 miles of beach Rockaway are still available - including a full boardwalk between 88th Street Beach and 91st Street Beach.

“We agree with the Parks Department's decision to ensure safety is of the utmost importance,” said Assistant Rescue Coordinator Javier Rodriguez.

“Unfortunately, there is not enough sand in this gap to swim safely, and we don’t want to endanger anyone’s life. We look forward to our rescuers manning other 4,5 miles of beach Rockawaythat will be open to safe swimming and relaxation. ”
