7 Secrets of Central Park, which you might not know
We all love Central Park and have been here more than once. But you may not know that it has secret gardens, relics from 1800's, and clues to help you not get lost.
1. 1811 artifact of the year
In Central Park, there is a rock with a large metal bolt protruding from it. Story? It is believed that this is one of the very first bolts, which indicated where the two streets will intersect. In all other places, these bolts were removed, and in the park it remained because it was added to the city plan later.
2. You can navigate by lanterns.
Here's what you need to do: go to one of the nearest lanterns, of which there are approximately 1600. Each lantern has four numbers. The first two indicate the nearest street, the second two indicate which direction you were going in: east or west. Even numbers are east, odd numbers are west.
3. Everything that grows in the garden of Shakespeare is mentioned in his works
Shakespeare's garden, located on the west side of the park near 79 Street, is covered with beautiful flowers. You can even find a classic quote board here. Interestingly, in the garden flowers bloom all the time. In each season, these or other plants bloom.
4. Curved roads for specific purposes.
Although horse carriages became history in New York, in the 19 century they were the only way to travel. In 1850, a winding road in the park wanted to prevent horse-drawn carriage races.
5. The horses on the carousel were real
In Central Park there is a carousel with horses. Now it is completely electric, but with 1873-1921, the mechanism was started using real horses.
6. Instead of the park were sheep pastures
Residents of the metropolis love to relax on sheep pastures, where from 1864 to 1934 the sheep really grazed. Animals grazed in the field, and then they were driven into the building, which later became a restaurant Tavern on the Green.
7. The park has remained part of the oldest highway in the city
During the restoration of part of the park, archaeologists found the remains of the cobblestone road of Kingsbridge Road, the oldest highway. They decided not to touch these fragments and leave them as a reminder of history.
