Hackers broke into the site of the Lithuanian army, writing about the annexation of Kaliningrad

Information appeared on the army website that the supposed purpose of the “Strike of the Sword” exercises, which are taking place in the Baltic countries and Poland, is preparation for the annexation of the Kaliningrad region. Spokesperson for the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense Victoria Ceminitė confirmed that false information was posted on the website. It has currently been deleted. “Analysts at the National Cyber ​​Security Center are investigating the hack,” Tseminitė said.

The Defense Ministry’s commentary says that an investigation has been launched in connection with the placement of false information. It is emphasized that a private company is responsible for the security of the site.

“On June 10, false information about international exercises taking place in Lithuania was posted on the website of the Joint Headquarters of the Lithuanian Army. The false information has been removed, and analysts from the National Cyber ​​Security Center are investigating the hack. A private company is responsible for the security of the server of the Joint Headquarters of the Lithuanian Army,” the comment says.

Exercise Strike 2015, which will take place June 1-19 in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, will involve approximately 6000 troops from 13 NATO countries and Finland. The exercise is being organized by US Army Europe.

The goal of these international exercises, organized by US forces in Europe, is to develop and improve the cooperation of allies in planning and conducting military operations, improving the professionalism of military personnel and developing skills in the actions of the host country, according to the Ministry of Defense.

Political analyst Nerijus Malyukevicius does not think that other aggressive actions may follow such attacks.

“This is how they traditionally demonstrate a certain cybernetic power. They show that they can hack networks, change information and spread propaganda messages,” the political scientist said.

“Just as Russia shows its power on the seas, including the Baltic, by violating the rules and specified zones, we observe such processes in cyberspace. Hacking, infiltration, and all this is demonstrated intentionally,” Malyukevičius is convinced.

The political scientist does not exclude that the attack may be associated with the activities of certain hostile organizations. For example, those that copy the actions of Anonymous Ukraine.
